This original watercolour portrait shows a hare in full Regency finery, seated with one leg crossed over the other and a look of faintly amused composure. His deep navy tailcoat is worn with a frothy white jabot and a cream waistcoat and breeches. He is every inch the country gentleman, though the wary amber eye suggests he hasn’t entirely forgotten he’s a hare.
The painting is worked in layered watercolour with fine ink detailing. The fur is built up in warm russets, ochres and umbers, with delicate whiskers and soft, translucent ears that let the light through. The coat is painted in inky blues and slate greys, and a loose, atmospheric wash of pale sky blue drifts behind him. A sprig of dark foliage at the lower right anchors the composition. The generous areas of bare paper leave the figure room to breathe.
Witty without being twee, it’s a portrait with real character, and it would suit a study, hallway, dining room or reading nook. It also makes a memorable gift for lovers of British wildlife, Regency and Georgian style, or the long tradition of dressed-up animals in art and storybooks.
