This original watercolour portrait shows a wire-haired fox terrier dressed for a day of doing exactly as he pleases. He wears faded denim dungarees with brass buttons and a little embroidered flower patch on the bib pocket, over a navy Breton-striped top, with a red polka-dot bandana knotted at his neck. One arm is tucked casually behind him, and he turns his head to the side with a look of alert, slightly mischievous curiosity. He’s the very picture of a terrier who has just heard something interesting in the hedge.
The painting is worked in layered watercolour with fine ink detailing. The wiry coat is built up in warm golds, tawny browns and soft greys, with individual strokes for the whiskers and beard that capture that scruffy terrier texture. The denim is painted in soft, streaky washes of blue that give it a well-worn, washed-out look, and the crisp stripes and splash of red add a lively pop of contrast. He stands alone on the clean white paper, which keeps the focus on his character and gives the whole piece a fresh, modern feel.
